Driving from East to West, or vice-verse, a trip along the southern coast of France is full of beauty and pleasure. The landscape changes from mountainous to hilly, then beach, from either the Italian or Spanish borders, geographically married at Marseille.
This easy drive along the A9/E15 provides thrilling sights from antiquity as well as modern time. Most people know about the Cote d'Azur and its many attractions. Their promotions are easy to find and the towns are busy. But the western side of the route belongs to Languedoc, a little quieter and yet offering fabulous places to see - each one unique.
Be sure to visit the burnt siena hills of ROUSILLON and the great market at NARBONNE, which surrounded by vineyards drops easily to the sea. Stop to watch fishing regatta at SETE and the distant views from the Pyrenees. Plan your overnites at any of wonderful places (with more competitive pricing than their eastern neighbors). Underscore a short detour onto route 80 - northwest, for a visit to the fortress at CARCASSONNE.
For a little dining recommendation, I cite the O fil de l'O where the owners prepare delicious local specialties with love.
